Educational training for Healthcare professionals by Alyson Smith
Educational training, course dates, types of education and testimonials

Alyson provides educational training for a variety of healthcare professionals and has delivered training to NHS Trust therapy departments, rehabilitation teams, neurology rehabilitation teams, osteopath conferences, osteopath regional training day, and nursing homes around Essex, support groups such as Parkinsons disease and Headway.
She is passionate in the promotion of treatment interventions which consider the whole person and which put the individual at the centre of their treatment.
During her 30 years+ of practise she has developed a deep curiosity about sensory feedback and state of mind and how they impact on human movement. She is keen to share what she has learned and how it has greatly improved outcomes and carry over from sessions.
Alyson can provide peer support sessions for senior members of teams, in-service training and joint treatment sessions for CPD of staff.
Course Portfolio and bespoke training development sessions on request:
Training for Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Therapy assistants, Osteopaths, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and Activity Co-ordinators
Most recent course:
For all therapists (physios, OT’s, osteopaths etc) who are interested in Human Movement.
How to work with patients to promote confidence and build positive movement, through understanding how our feedback systems can help or hinder movement
There is a slight skew towards neurological disorders and elderly rehabilitation, but it is relevant to all therapists who have patients whose movements are limited through:
- ingrained poor patterns of movement, with reduced awareness of their body
• fear of movement due to chronic pain or falls
• changes to neurological systems (stroke/MS/PD FND etc),The focus is on human movement and how to improve confidence, through safe and controlled exploration of boundaries.
Helping your patients to:
• Understand their own movement and how/why it is limited
• promote self exploration
• expand their movement boundaries
• experience positive movement again,The day will include an overview of:
• how altered sensory feedback (eyes, vestibular app, sensation, proprioception) effects ‘normal’ human movement
• How we can direct our patients’ attention to alter sensory feedback, changing how that sensation is perceived
• How state of mind (fear, expectations etc) alters human movement
There will be a large practical element where we will explore:
• Building rapport/trust
• Simple use of breath to alter state.
• Self-exploration of own body and altered movement patterns/sensory feedback to gain personal experience of how change happens.
• How to quickly build ‘grounding’ and controlled, safe self-exploration of boundaries to build better movement.
• Patient case studies and discussion of how you can use the treatment techniques with a wide variety of your patients.
Approx 6 hours trainingPrevious feedback from this course: “I find your examples of practice with clients particularly useful” “good to look at things from a different perspective” ”I love your enthusiasm and passion, it is infectious and just what I needed” “All of the day was very useful, I particularly enjoyed watching the treatment video and getting to play the VR plank” ”I can use this with my every day practice, those who have fear of pain or falling”
Educational Training for healthcare workers
Strategies for maintaining confidence, aiding self-protection and defusing difficult situations at work:
Empowering the individual to have the skills and techniques necessary to recognise and reduce workplace stresses. The session covers (by practical and discussions) maintaining boundaries and addressing personal responsibilities, building and maintaining confidence before and during difficult discussions, effective communication techniques and simple questioning techniques which can be used to reduce confusion, misunderstanding and assumptions which often arise in complex situations. Includes practical ideas and gives skills to take away and use. For all members of the team.
Helping those who help others to stand or walk to understand how important factors like fear (of falling, loss of control) effect the way people move.
Together we explore how a fearful state of mind alters movement patterns, expectations and confidence.
The education session includes practical suggestions which can be used to build residents’ confidence, reduce fear and improve how someone moves.
It is a useful tool in the prevention of falls and maintenance of independence. The carers understand why their residents’ mobility has changed. They will gain practical skills, such as which words work best “stay stood up tall” rather than “don’t sit down”, and best way to help people to feel safe rather than increasing fear.
They will learn simple exercises, which they can use during personal care activities (for example), to help their residents relearn a more positive balance reaction and ultimately improve safety.

“Move with confidence” exercise groups for residents
A course for activity coordinators who want to run dynamic action groups for their residents. The course is aimed at learning how to improve other’s confidence when moving and puts to gether a group activity based around a table (seated and/or standing) using a mixture of education and fun games and movements which gently encourages participants to investigate their own movement and balance to widen boundaries.
